Brick by Brick

So today, I'm over at Writer Unboxed talking about the illusion that I write quickly. I don't. Really. At least, I don't think that I do. But I do set up certain parameters than ensure that I meet my deadlines without making my life a living hell, and I also understand - fully - that this is work. Plain and simple. Writing is a WONDERFUL job to have and to be able to do full-time, but let's not kid ourselves that it doesn't require us to push up our sleeves and dive in when the going gets tough. Which it does pretty frequently around these parts.

So anyhoo, click over and check out my strategies on getting the job done, and feel free to share your own strategies while you're there!

Looking forward to reading about your process! I'm particularly struggling as of late, for various reasons. You might not have THE answer, but you might be able to spark AN answer for me. :)

Great advice, Allison! I have a 800 words a day goal, because while it's more than the easy 500, it's less intimidating than 1,000 words. And since I'm aiming for an 80,000-word manuscript, it's 1% of my goal achieved each day that I write.

Where I run into trouble, and I guess others do as well, is knowing that I only have about 30 minutes left in the evening (fiction is still a part-time endeavor), and that there's no way I'd be able to write 1,000 words in that time period. So I don't start at all. Three days like that I'm back where I started. Instead, I should just write the 200, 100, or even 50 words in the 30 minutes I do have. But of course, that's easier said than done.

I keep trying though.

Hi Allison, I read your post at Writer Unboxed, and I'm wondering how many words is your usual manuscript? 70 or 100K?
